About Sozopol

Sozopol is a small but beautiful city located on the southern Bulgarian Black Sea coastline. It is one of the oldest and most popular resorts in the country. Its authentic atmosphere attracts travellers from all over the world year-round.

The colourful history of the settlement began more than 7 000 years ago. Through the epochs, it was inhabited by Greeks, Romans, and Bulgars. Each of those civilisations left its mark on this location. Sozopol’s most famous name in ancient times was Apolloniya, after the Greek god. According to ancient writers, a massive temple with a 13-meter high monument of Apollo stood on the peninsula before it was destroyed during a Roman invasion in 72 BC.

In the V century, the Romans themselves decided to fortify the city and the walls stood firm for 300 years before the Bulgarian Khan Krum conquered it. Sozopol became an important spiritual centre, with numerous Orthodox churches and monasteries. An explicit example of that fact was the discovery of relics of St. John the Baptist on a nearby island.

Nowadays, Sozopol is divided into a so-called Old Town and a modern quarter. The Old Town is famous for its romantic atmosphere and authentic architecture, while the modern quarter has hotels, restaurants, bars, and everything else needed at a modern resort. Many types of accommodation are available here, from luxury hotels to small family guesthouses or even bungalows. In the vicinity, there are a few spots for camping as well.

Sights

There are many interesting cultural, historical, and natural sights that can be visited in Sozopol:

  • The old town, an architectural museum-reserve that includes more than 180 buildings, some dating back to the XVIII century. Most of the houses are entirely made from stone and wood;
  • The archaeological museum, where you can see many artefacts from the resort’s rich history;
  • The art gallery, to experience the city’s culture;
  • St. Cyril and St. Methodius Church, where the relics of St. John the Baptist are on display for pilgrims from all around the world;
  • Two sunny beaches with vast dunes;
  • The Ropotamo Nature Reserve.

Those are the main attraction points, but you can always explore and experience more. Hundreds of opportunities are waiting for you!

Activity ideas and attractions

There are lots of activities and attractions that Sozopol offers to its guests. Of course, the most trivial will be to enjoy the sun and the breeze, but there is much more. Arguably, the most significant event in the resort is The Apollonia Festival held yearly at the beginning of September. A cultural program gathers the most renowned artists from Bulgaria.

Many sports activities are possible at the city’s coastline, including beach volleyball, boating, jet-skiing, surfing, and fishing. The Ropotamo Nature Reserve is nearby and visitors may take a riverboat trip observing the diverse birds and plant life. If you like a bit more excitement, near the vacation place is the Neptune Aquapark in Ravadinovo!

Parties and nightlife

This part of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast is not as famous for its thrilling nightlife as Sunny Beach, but it still presents abundant opportunities. Bars, discos, clubs, beach parties, and raves are all waiting for you to join in the fun.
